Though George Lucas remains creatively in control, he has allowed his successors to explore various avenues for their films in the franchise. Each new movie draws influence from its predecessors; themes, characters and plot points often reappear from movie to movie.
Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the animated spinoff of the prequels’ animated spin-off, brought his signature genre-mashup style from Samurai Jack into this series – mixing action set pieces with wordless scenes of imagination – while John Williams added culture-melting grandeur with his musical score.
Canby applauded Episode VIII, with writer/director Rian Johnson making an attempt to stamp his own mark onto an established franchise while resisting individual authorship. According to Canby, Johnson “largely succeeds” though some parts of the plot may feel repetitive at times; Poe, Finn and Rey remain as strong characters while Adam Driver makes Kylo Ren a compelling villain while characters such as Kelly Marie Tran add diversity back into the series.
